Getting From Hong Kong To Zhuhai: 3 Best Options

New routes between Hong Kong and Zhuhai are making traveling between the two cities easier than ever before. The construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB) opened up a new route for commuters in October 2018. The architectural wonder stretches 55 kilometers (34.2 miles) over vast bodies of water and even breaks world records by including the world’s deepest “tube” tunnel. With the longest bridge in the world, travellers are now able to make the commute via car service, shuttle bus, or ferry. So, the question now is: Which is the best way of getting from Hong Kong to Zhuhai?

In this blog, we provide a step-by-step guide on how to get from Hong Kong to Zhuhai, taking into account these 4 factors: time, convenience, comfort, and cost.

  • Convenience: Very Low
  • Comfort: Low
  • Cost: Low (see below)

Hong Kong to Zhuhai By Shuttle Bus

Travel to HZM Bridge Hong Kong Port (from HK Downtown: 40 min. / from HK Airport 7-10 min.) →
→ Pass through HK Immigration & clear Customs (10-15 min.)
→ Purchase a bridge shuttle bus ticket on the same floor & get on the bus (15-20 min.)
→ Travel to Zhuhai Port (45 – 60 min.)
→ Get off the bus with luggage & pass through Zhuhai Immigration at Zhuhai Port (10-20 min.)
→ Walk to Taxi area & wait in a queue (5-10 min.)
→ Take Taxi to Zhuhai final destination (15-20 min.)

Summary: The Shuttle Bus is one of the most cost-effective ways of getting from Hong Kong to Zhuhai. Unfortunately, it can also be one of the more tedious options. The journey requires several changes in routes and modes of transport; since the shuttle bus only covers the trip from HZMB Hong Kong Port to Zhuhai Port, you can expect to be getting on and off with your luggage several times along the way. Firstly, you will need to find your own way to and from these ports. Luckily, Hong Kong is extensively served by bus routes that could take you from your initial point (whether it’s downtown HK or the HK Airport) to HZMB Hong Kong Port. Once in Zhuhai, getting from the Zhuhai Port to your hotel may not be as simple. There are two public bus routes available and the local taxis. Though the HZMB shuttle buses operate 24 hours a day, the public transportation in both Hong Kong and Zhuhai only operates before midnight.

Recommendation: Due to the multiple transport changes along the way, Shuttle Buses tend to be the slowest option to get from Hong Kong to Zhuhai. It’s the perfect option for adventurous travelers on a more conservative budget who have plenty of time to spare. However, for visitors/travelers carrying several suitcases, with less time to spare, or looking for an overall less exhaustive route, a private cross-border car service would provide a more expeditious, swift, and comfortable experience.

Ferries depart from 3 different Hong Kong Ferry Terminals (Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal, China Ferry Terminal, and HK Airport SkyPier Ferry Terminal) to Zhuhai Jiuzhou Ferry Terminal that is located in downtown Zhuhai. Once there, you will still need to take a taxi or bus to get to/from the ferry terminal.

RecommendationThere are 4 to 7 ferry departures per day depending on your departure port (in Hong Kong), so be sure to take that into consideration. Generally, there is no need to book your ferry in advance. However, Zhuhai is a popular tourist destination, so if you happen to be traveling on a holiday or during peak hours, it’s advisable that you check available tickets online and consider booking in advance. Having your ticket arranged beforehand can save you time and prevent being stuck in the peak hour queues. For late night arrivals after 9 pm, we recommend that you consider other options like a private car service.

Summary: The most cost-effective way to get from Hong Kong to Macau is by taking the shuttle bus. Unfortunately, this is also the most time-costly way to get there. This is because the shuttle bus only covers the trip over the HZMB Hong Kong Port to the Macau Port. Therefore, you’ll need to find your own way to and from these ports. While Hong Kong itself is extensively served by bus routes to the HZMB Hong Kong Port, getting from the Macau Port directly to your destination is only viable through 2 public bus routes or a local taxi. RecommendationShuttle buses offer a perfect option for adventurous travelers on a tight budget, with plenty of time to spare. For business visitors, travelers with lots of luggage, or anyone on a tight schedule, the journey by shuttle bus may prove to be too time-consuming and exhaustive.

► Step 5: Get to Hotel or Final Destination in Macau

From the Macau Port, the easiest way to arrive at your destination is with a taxi or private car service in Macau.

  • By Public Bus

For public transportation, there are only two bus routes to the city: No.101X to Macau city center and No.102X to the Taipa Village area.

  • By Shuttle Bus

Alternatively, you can hop on a shuttle bus to one of the two ferry terminals: Macau Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal (close to Macau city center) and Macau Taipa Ferry Terminal. From either of these ferry terminals, you may find a free shuttle bus to your hotel in Macau. Ferry shuttle buses run from 9:00 am to 00:00, with 5-7 shifts/hours.

Hong Kong To Macau By Private Car

Private driver picks you up in Hong Kong, helps with your luggage (5 min.)
→ Travel to HZM Bridge by private car (20-45 min.)
→ Exit the vehicle & pass through HK and Macau Border Immigration by foot (10-15 min.)
→ On Macau side of the border, another driver greets you, takes care of your luggage & escorts you to a different private car with Macau license plate (5 min.)
→ Travel to Macau hotel (7-15 min.).

Summary.

This is, by far, the most expeditious and comfortable way to travel between Hong Kong and Macau 24 hours a day. Many companies offer English speaking drivers and VIP meet & greet services from the Hong Kong Airport.

When hiring a private car service, a professional driver greets you in the lobby of your hotel, or pre-arranged pickup location, and escorts you to the vehicle. Your suitcase(s) are stored safely in the luggage compartment as you make yourself comfortable. The journey to Macau is door-to-door, meaning the car picks you up from any point in Hong Kong and delivers you directly to the door of your Macau hotel. Hong Kong border doesn’t require you to exit the car. Macau border, on the other hand, requires all non Hong Kong and Macau residents to exit the car to pass the immigration border. At the halfway point, once you’ve reached the HK-Macau border, your private chauffeur will point you in the direction of the Macau immigration counters. This process might take around 15 minutes. Once you’ve passed the immigration into Macau, the same driver will be waiting for you to re-board a private car at a “get on” area of Macau border exit. Luckily, our experienced chauffeurs will help you at every point and take care of your luggage, making your transfer as effortless and stress-free as possible.

Our private limousine service vehicle options include economy and business sedans, business MPVs (up to 6 passengers), and Mercedes S-Class luxury sedans (up to 3-4 passengers). Services are offered 24 hours a day.

RecommendationThe Private Car Service is the most time-efficient and flexible transportation option. No waiting times or queuing. Our private car service offers swift, smooth, worry-free experience with professional chauffeurs, and as such it’s the most convenient transportation option. A luxurious travel experience, this is a favorite for business travelers, families traveling with children, and senior travelers.

3. Hong Kong To Macau By Cross-Boundary Coach

One Bus

  • Time: 1h 50min – 2h 30min
  • Convenience: Moderate to High
  • Comfort: Moderate
  • Cost: Low (see below)
  • Travel Steps & Timeline:

Hong Kong to Macau By Cross-Boundary Coach

  • Travel To Hong Kong Downtown (10-30 min.) → Buy Cross-Border Coach Ticket (15-20 min.)
    → Board the Coach (min.)
→ Travel to HZMB Hong Kong Port (40 min.)
→ Get off the Coach for immigration clearance (min.)
→ Pass through HK Immigration & clear Customs (15-25 min.)
→ Re-board the same Coach with your ticket (5-10 min.)
→ Travel to Macau hotel (15-20 min.)

Summary. The cross-border coach is a similar, if not more convenient option, than the shuttle bus to travel from Hong Kong to Macau. The cross-border coaches pick passengers up from Hong Kong downtown areas, deliver them to the bridge where they disembark and pass through the Customs by foot with their luggage, and then reboard the coach to continue to various hotels in Macau. Therefore, the coach provides more flexibility than the HZMB shuttle buses because it brings you from the Hong Kong central areas all the way to downtown Macau.

RecommendationUnlike with the shuttle bus, you’ll avoid the hassle of having to find a new mode of transport once at the Hong Kong Port (or Macau Port).  Remember your coach plate number and keep your ticket so you can re-board the same coach after customs clearance. The only disadvantage is that you’ll only have 15 minutes for immigration to catch the same bus, otherwise, you’ll need to wait about 30-60 minutes for the next available bus (and hope you find a seat!).

► Step 1: Get on Cross-boundary Coach in HK Downtown

There are 2 bus companies that serve Hong Kong to Macau route:One Busand Hong Kong – Macao Express. One bus picks passengers up from the APM shopping mall in Hong Kong and brings them to three different hotels in Macau. HK-MO Express is available at Kowloon Station (Elements Shopping Mall) and Prince Edward and stops at 7 hotels in Macau.

► Step 2: Clear Customs & Immigration

The cross-border bus will stop at both sides of the bridge to allow the passengers to clear Customs and Immigration (15 minutes). At this point, you’ll exit the coach bus with your luggage and, once you’ve passed through Immigration, re-board the same coach with your ticket.

Note:
1. Remember the coach license plate number to make sure you board the same coach.

2. The bus driver will only wait for 15 minutes. If you’re late for your initial coach, approach the staff to help you wait and get onto the next coach. You’ll have to wait for 30-60 minutes.

3. If you miss the original coach bus and there are no places available on the following buses, you will not receive a refund for the ticket.

► Step 3: Travel To Macau Hotel

Once you’ve loaded your luggage and boarded the coach, the bus driver will make the designated stops to a few hotels in Macau. If your particular hotel is not on the designated route, it’d be best to try to find the hotel-stop nearest to your destination.

Summary. The ferry is a popular method of getting from Macau to Hong Kong. Ferries are a relatively quick and easy way of getting between the two cities. Arranging an airport transfer from Macau airport to Hong Kong bound ferry terminals can be done quickly when using reputable car services.

The times that ferries arrive and depart from Macau’s two ports (Macau Outer Harbour & Taipa Ferry Terminal) can be found on their official websites. Be sure to check the times and plan around them if you’re planning on visiting some sights before jumping on board the ferry. Ticket prices may vary depending on your chosen port, ferry service, time, and day of the week that you travel. Evening departures and those over the weekends are generally more expensive across all of the ferry operators.

Quickest Route. The quickest route from Hong Kong to downtown Macau is with TurboJET from the Hong Kong – Macau (Sheung Wan) Ferry Terminal to the Macau Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal. With this route you have the option of sightseeing in the center of Macau. Alternatively, you can take Cotai Water Jet ferry from the Hong Kong Sheung Wan Ferry Terminal to the Macau Taipa Ferry Terminal to arrive at the modern hotels and visit a few of the world-famous casinos.

RecommendationHong Kong to Macau ferry services offers a combined 158 sailings each day. They depart from 4 different Hong Kong Ferry Terminals (2 of which are located in Hong Kong’s downtown area) and 2 Macau Ferry Terminals that are at close proximity to popular 5-star hotels. You may still need to take a taxi to get to/from the ferry terminal. Macau is considered one of the most densely populated places on the planet, so if you’re planning on boarding a ferry that’s heading from Hong Kong to Macau at peak times, it’s worth booking in advance. Having your ticket arranged beforehand can save you time and prevent the hassle of being stuck in the peak hour queues. For late night arrivals after 9-10 pm, we recommend you consider taking a private car service.

► Where do you embark?

Four Ferry Terminals in Hong Kong:

  1. Hong Kong Macau (Sheung Wan) Ferry Terminal
This is the largest and most frequented ferry terminal by tourists. Conveniently located in Shun Tak Center of Hong Kong island at Sheung Wan MTR Station (Exit D), it offers the quickest routes to Macau. Both TurboJET and Cotai Water Jet sail from here.
  2. China Ferry Terminal (Kowloon)
Located in downtown Hong Kong, at the Hong Kong China City shopping mall in Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon), China Ferry Terminal is the second best option for ferry voyages. TurboJET ferries sail 14 times a day every hour, while Cotai Jet offers 6 sails for a half day (before 1.15 pm) to Macau Taipa Ferry Terminal.
  3. Tuen Mun Ferry Terminal (New Territories)
Located further from the Hong Kong city center, this ferry terminal is less convenient for most travelers. Only TurboJET ferries depart from here with 7-9 sails per day.
  4. SkyPier Terminal at Hong Kong Airport
The terminal is located inside the Hong Kong International Airport and is intended for the use of transit passengers only. There are 4-5 sails available between SkyPier and Macau. If you are coming back from Macau, you must have a valid flight ticket to be eligible to buy a ticket for the SkyPier ferry.

► Where do you disembark?

Hotels nearby: The Parisian Macao, The Venetian Macao Resort Hotel, Grand Hyatt Macau, Galaxy Hotel, JW Marriott Hotel Macau, Four Seasons Hotel Macau Cotai Strip, St. Regis Macao Cotai Central, Sheraton Grand Macao Hotel, Banyan Tree Macau.

► Where to buy ferry tickets?

Ferry tickets can be purchased at the ticket counters of any ferry terminal or online on TurboJET and Cotai Water Jet official websites.

► See Sailing Schedules here: for TurboJET and Cotai Water Jet.

► Travel Tip:

Keep your eyes out for ‘ticket touts’ selling fake and illegal tickets at the ferry terminals. The HK-Macau ferry terminal is known to have a number of them, unfortunately, so be wary of anyone lurking outside elevators enthusiastically beckoning you to an ‘agent’s office’ before selling you a fake ticket. Some even pose as ‘inspectors’ and with a well practised sleight of hand, swap your legitimate ticket for a fake one. Don’t hand or show your ticket to anyone that isn’t wearing an official uniform.

4 Best Ways To Get From Guangzhou to Shenzhen: Step-By-Step Guide

Compare Transportation Options from Guangzhou To Shenzhen To Find Which Suits You Best.

The route from Guangzhou to Shenzhen is very popular among business travelers. These trips are often for visiting local factories and suppliers in either city. Infrequent or first-time travelers to the region may find it a challenge to get from Guangzhou to Shenzhen. Many are only vaguely aware of the available transportation options and even less aware of what to expect during the journey itself.

After reading this blog, you will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to effectively select the right option for you.

There are four main modes of transportation from Guangzhou to Shenzhen; train, private car, coach bus, and taxi.  Each differs in the 4 key areas of concern you should consider, regarding this journey:

  1. TimeHow much time do I have to spend to get to my Shenzhen destination? Am I looking for the quickest route?
  2. ConvenienceAre switches between different modes of transport during this trip something I mind dealing with?
  3. ComfortHow comfortable am I sharing a full vehicle and walking with all my luggage at various points in the journey?
  4. CostWhat is my budget for this journey? Am I limited by cost or can I spend a bit more for an increase in convenience and comfort?

Keeping this criteria in mind, let’s briefly compare and review each transport, then we’ll take a more in-depth look at the pros and cons of each.

Travel Steps & Timeline:

Travel Steps By Train

  • Guangzhou Initial Point → Take Taxi / Subway to one of the Guangzhou Railway Stations (30 min.-1 h)
→ Buy Train Tickets to Shenzhen (15-25 min. Wait for the next departure (25-90 min)
→ Travel by Train from Guangzhou to Shenzhen (29 min – 1h 39 min)
→ Arrive at one of the Shenzhen Railway Stations
→ Queue For Taxi / Subway (10-25 min.)
    → Reach Final Destination in Shenzhen (30 min.-1 h)

Summary. Trains from Guangzhou to Shenzhen run  daily from 06:00 to 23:00 (see detailed schedule below). They depart from all railway stations in Guangzhou and arrive at various Shenzhen railway stations. This makes your trip by train more flexible since you can choose which departure and arrival station is closest to your hotel or destination point. There are over 220 trains running both ways on the Guangzhou – Shenzhen line. Of these, 205 are high-speed trains. The shortest train route takes only 30-53 minutes from Guangzhou South Railway Station to Shenzhen North Railway Station. You will also need to factor in the time needed to get to and from these train stations. Note that both Guangzhou and Shenzhen are big cities prone to having heavy traffic at times. As such, taking taxis to your destination could add a significant amount of time to the journey.

Recommendation. Choosing to take a train from Guangzhou to Shenzhen can be a convenient option. Multiple trains depart every day from various convenient stations. However, for travelers with no experience in reading Chinese, a general discomfort with busy railway stations, and their long waiting times for ticket purchase and departure times, it can be a rather stressful affair.

If you’re adventurous, light on luggage, and have plenty of time to spare, getting from Guangzhou to Shenzhen by train is a decent option at relatively low cost (see costs below). Plan a flexible schedule as delays are inevitable – wait & queue for a taxi to get to the station in Guangzhou; at the railway station while passing through security; purchasing the ticket; waiting for the next train departure; and (once arrived in Shenzhen) a final wait at the taxi stand or metro station.  For those looking for a quick and easy alternative, hiring a private car eliminates all of these inconveniences.

Guangzhou to Shenzhen Trains In Detail

Every day, over 140 pairs of trains run between Guangzhou and Shenzhen. There are 2 types of trains that depart daily: C, D, and G high-speed trains and K, T and Z normal trains. ► Step 2. Where Do You Arrive?

Arrival Stations in Shenzhen:

1. Shenzhen Railway Station:

Located in Luohu District, this station is next to the Luohu Port which is the closest cross-border checkpoint to Hong Kong. From Shenzhen Railway station, you can take a taxi, subway, or city bus to the city center or an airport shuttle bus to Shenzhen International Airport (SZX).

2. Shenzhen North Railway Satation:

Located in Longhua, Bao’an District, the station is farther from downtown Shenzhen. However, subways, city buses, and coaches make transits convenient for passengers. Shenzhen Metro Lines 4, 5 and 6 are in walking distance. Passengers going to Beijing, Xiamen, Xi’an, or Zhengzhou can also catch a bullet train from here.

3. Shenzhen Futian Railway Station:

This station is on the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link, and is the final station on mainland China before the train enters Hong Kong. The station is located in Futian District of Shenzhen, convenient for passengers in the southern part of the city. Both subway lines and city buses are available for easy transfers.

► How To Buy Train Tickets?

At a Train Station:

You can buy a train ticket at any train station in Guangzhou using cash, Chinese bank cards, and WeChat-wallet or Alipay (if available). Foreign credit cards are not usually accepted, so be sure to have a backup plan. You’ll need to bring your passport; a copy of your passport won’t be accepted by the ticket clerks. Self-service machines at the stations are for passengers holding Chinese ID cards only. If possible, try to buy train tickets a few days in advance to avoid the chance of them being sold out.

► Online:

If you can read Chinese and have a Chinese bank account, you can book train tickets online on Chinese Railways’ official website www.12306.cn without any additional fees, filling out your passport details.

If you’ve successfully purchased your train ticket online, it’s still recommended that you arrive at the train station at least 40 minutes before your departure. You’ll need to show your reservation number and original copy of passport to receive a printed ticket, to board the train. Unfortunately, there is no fast queue for just printing out your online ticket, you will still need to queue up together with the people looking to purchase their ticket.

Change Ticket:

If you’d like to change your ticket to an earlier or later time, you may change it once, free of charge. Any changes beyond that first time will incur additional fees. Changes to your ticket must be made at the ticket windows of the station. Make sure to confirm that you can at the window before queuing up to avoid any waste of time.

► Few Things to Note:

► During National holidays in China, the demand for trains is extremely high. Train tickets are usually sold out a month in advance. Traveling is not recommended during the National holidays, particularly: 1) the Chinese New Year Period in January/February, and 2) National ‘Golden Week’ in October 1–7th.

► All Guangzhou Railway Stations are large stations like airports. It takes time to navigate them to find the ticket counters, the railway platform, or the long-distance bus area. There are also security checks at the entrances. Most people don’t speak English. At times, it can be a stressful experience to find where you need to go. Make sure to carefully follow the signs, and with patience you’ll arrive at the designated areas.

► Trains typically depart on time without delays. Nevertheless, make sure to arrive at the railway platform in advance to queue and board.

► Guangzhou and Shenzhen are large megapolises with heavy traffic, you’ll need to factor in additional time to find the transportation to your final destination in Shenzhen. Plan your time accordingly.

With a private car service, you never need to worry about changes because communication is not an issue with drivers who speak fluent English. 3. Guangzhou Airport to Shenzhen By Coach Bus

Guangzhou to Shenzhen By Bus

  • Time: Slowest, 2.5 – 4.5 hrs
  • Convenience: Low
  • Comfort: Lowest
  • Cost: Lowest (see below)

Travel Steps & Timeline:

Travel Steps By Coach Bus

  • Get a taxi or metro to reach one of the bus stations in Guangzhou (5-10 min.)
→ Purchase a ticket and wait to board coach (20-40 min.)
→ Board coach and travel to Shenzhen (2.5-3.5 hours)
→ Make way to the taxi stand, queue and wait for a taxi / metro (10-20 min.)
→ Take a taxi to Shenzhen destination (15-20 min.)

Summary. The Coach Bus from Guangzhou to Shenzhen is by far the slowest and least convenient way to travel between cities. Although the bus schedule is readily available, there’s no guarantee the coach buses will depart on time. The bus departs once there are enough people on board. Adding to that, the speed of the bus on the road is quite slow and the journey can take a significant amount of time (up to 4.5 hours to arrive at your hotel in Shenzhen).

Recommendation. Traveling by bus from Guangzhou to Shenzhen is the slowest option, however it’s also the lowest priced. The journey by bus takes an unpredictably long time due to the heavy traffic along that route. You should note that operators at bus stations only speak Chinese. The signs at the big bus stations are not always straightforward and it is difficult to communicate when purchasing your ticket. This option is only recommended for travelers with plenty of time and on a very low budget.

Guangzhou to Shenzhen By Coach In Detail

Buses depart daily from different coach/bus stations both in Guangzhou and Shenzhen. The buses are quite slow and depending on traffic conditions, the duration of the journey can be anywhere from 2 hours to over 5 hours. You will need to consider the time on the coach, as well as to get to/from the bus station and to your final destination in Shenzhen.

The bus service time is from 05:35 to 22:00 in Shenzhen and from 04:00 to 23:00 in Guangzhou. The most convenient part of using the coach option is that passengers can catch a coach at any Guangzhou bus station and choose the departure station in Shenzhen (when you purchase the ticket).

For example, a direct bus from Guangzhou to Shenzhen departs from Guangzhou Municipal and arrives at Shenzhen Futian. There is a coach to Shenzhen every 12 minutes at the Guangdong Provincial Coach Station (广东省汽车客运站) from 06:10 to 23:00, and there is a coach every 15 minutes at Guangzhou Coach Station (广州汽车客运站) from 06:00 to 22:00. The approximate ticket price of around CNY 60-65 Yuan (USD 9). A coach from Guangzhou Airport Station goes only to Shenzhen Longgang and Yinhu Stations.

See Detailed Coach Bus Service Hours

► Step 1. Where Do You Depart From?

Departure Stations in Shenzhen:

Buses depart from the following Guangzhou coach stations: Guangzhou Municipal, Guangzhou Provincial, Guangzhou Airport, Dongpu, Huangpu, Haizhu, Guangyuan, Jiaokou, Luochongwei, Fangcun, Guangyuan, Fangcun, and Tianhe. The main bus stations are:

► Tianhe Bus Station 天河汽车客运站

  • Located in a newly developed Tianhe district that is called Guangzhou’s Silicon Valley, this station is close to Guangzhou downtown.
  • Address: 633 Yanling Road, Guangzhou 广州市燕岭路633号 (not far from Guangzhou East Railway Station)

► Guangzhou Provincial Bus Station 广州省汽车客运站

  • Guangzhou Provincial Bus station is near the Guangzhou train railway station which is located on Metro line 2 and line 5.
  • Address: No. 147-149, Huanshi West Road, Guangzhou 广州市环市西路147-149号

► Yuexiu South Bus Station 越秀南汽车站

  • Located in the oldest downtown area and the commercial center of Guangzhou.
  • Address: at the crossing of Yuexiu Nan Road and Dongyuan Heng Road, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou (广州越秀区越秀南路东园横路交叉口)

► Step 2. Where Do You Arrive?

Arrival Bus Stations in Shenzhen:

Buses from Guangzhou arrive at Shenzhen Futian, Nanshan, Luohu, Bao’an, Longgang, Yinhu and Shenzhen Airport Stations.

If you need to get to Shenzhen city center, then the Futian or Nanshan Stations are a better choice. Luohu Station provides easy access to Hong Kong and is linked to the metro system and city buses to go downtown. Both Bao’an and Longgang Bus Stations are far from Shenzhen city downtown, located in industrial areas of Shenzhen. These destinations may be better suited for factory visits. Located in Futian District, Yinhu Bus Station is only for buses coming from Guangzhou Airport Station.

4. Guangzhou to Shenzhen By Taxi

 Guangzhou to Shenzhen By Taxi

  • Time: 2.5 – 3.5 hours
  • Convenience: Low
  • Comfort: High
  • Cost: See below

Summary. A final option to get from Guangzhou to Shenzhen is by taxi, which takes about 3 hours. It’s not easy to find an authorized taxi that will go from Guangzhou to other neighboring cities, like Shenzhen. These taxis normally operate only within the city area, as there are additional tolls for taxi drivers to pay when leaving the Guangzhou area. Therefore, many of them tend to refuse trips to other cities. Even when they do accept, they’ll expect prices to be negotiated, refusing to use the taxi meter. Even if you can negotiate with the driver in Chinese (as taxi drivers don’t speak English) and the driver acts in good faith, the price he actually charges is uncertain and may fluctuate depending on time, traffic, and the driver’s overall mood, causing you significant stress, frustration, and delay.

*Note: More and more taxis only take payment online via Wechat or Alipay now, cash is less and less common in China. Though they may accept cash, they’ll likely tell you they don’t have any change, so expect to leave a big tip. As of the date of this blog, you must open a Chinese bank account to link to Wechat or Alipay wallet, in order to make such payments. This can be problematic for foreigners, due to the obvious hassles of time spent opening new bank accounts and because taxis don’t accept international credit cards either.

There are also ‘black taxis’ operating outside of most public stations, and this is an opportunity for scam attempts. Black taxis offer you a price that seems reasonable or even cheap, and then they drop you off in the middle of the highway. Never take an illegal car, always make sure they are from a reputable company. Booking a trustworthy private transfer online prior to your arrival is a better and safer option to travel between Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

Recommendation. We don’t recommend this option. However, if you’re still inclined we would suggest only travelers who have local knowledge and ability to negotiate in Chinese to attempt it. Even knowledgeable locals find themselves victim to these scams at times.

5.

Guangzhou to Shenzhen Summary

With the multitude of options available there’s really no one “best way” to get from Guangzhou to Shenzhen. However, depending on your requirements there are some clear winners:

  • If your number #1 concern is a low price and you aren’t concerned about time or the inconvenience of carrying your luggage, you should take a Guangzhou – Shenzhen Train.
  • If your number #1 concern is the lowest possible price and you have plenty of time to spare, you may choose to travel by Coach Bus.
  • If your number #1 concern is time, safety, convenience, and comfort, then you should consider hiring a private car. This option is also highly recommended for those traveling on business, with a lot of luggage, traveling with kids, or seniors.

The biggest advantage of taking this route is that you won’t have to carry your luggage at every step of the journey. Rather, just collect it upon arrival at the Shenzhen Port. The ferry schedule is relatively flexible with more frequent routes to Shenzhen Shekou Ferry Port. Upon arrival at Shenzhen, you can take an authorised taxi to your final destination or hotel. There may be some ‘black taxi’ drivers outside the exit, avoid these and head to the designated city-taxi waiting area of the terminal. If you’re not sure where to go, don’t be afraid to ask, there are information counters and uniformed personnel at the terminal. Note: taxi drivers do not communicate in English, so have your address written in Chinese beforehand to show the driver and avoid any confusion.

RecommendationTaking the ferry is a great option to travel from Hong Kong Airport to Shenzhen. However, it’s only available to passengers who arrive at the Hong Kong Airport and are directly transferring to Mainland China (on the same day). It’s also convenient for passengers who would like to catch the next flight out from Shenzhen Airport. Don’t cut that connection to close, though. However, The ferry is not available for late night flights. If you would like to have a more flexible transportation option, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, consider booking  a private car transfer  from Hong Kong to Shenzhen.

All same day arrival passengers with valid travel documents or visa can use the ferry service. When in doubt, ask the employees at the ticket counter to help with ensuring your luggage is transferred to the ferry.

Step 2. Proceed to ferry boarding

However, it becomes busy and crowded around 8 am and 5 pm during weekdays, and generally all day on weekends and holidays.

Travel Steps By Private Car

HK Airport Arrival Hall Driver Greeting (1 min.) → Get escorted to the vehicle and board (5 min.)
→ Travel by Private Car to the border (15-20 min.)
→ Pass through HK within the car (5 min.)
→ Pass Shenzhen Huanggang Border Immigration by foot (required by PRC law) (1o-15 min.)
→ Travel to Shenzhen Final Destination (20-30 min.).

The volume of people crossing the border at the same time as you is always an uncertainty. Although it may be few people, at peak hours you may find yourself queuing with over a hundred other travelers. Only a private driver service ensures the quickest cross-border transfer. Private car services help save a lot of time and effort when you’re crossing the border between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, because you won’t even have to exit the vehicle while passing through the Hong Kong – Shenzhen border.

Unlike the ferry service, the private driver will pick you up from the Hong Kong Airport and transfer you to any destination or hotel in Shenzhen door-to-door. Meaning, you are met by the driver as you arrive at the HK Airport Arrival Hall, travel through the border, pass through the HK immigration,, then pass through the Shenzhen immigration (the Chinese government does require travelers to pass through the Shenzhen immigration by foot – however, it’s a short walk and the car will be waiting outside), and finally proceed to your hotel or final destination. Minimum waiting times, maximum efficiency.

Hong Kong Airport Transfer to Shenzhen by a private car

Another advantage of taking a Hong Kong private transfer is its flexibility. We provide a full car service with driver in Hong Kong and China Mainland with a 24/7 Customer Support team. Whether you arrive late at night or in the early morning hours, we will arrange a timely and smooth pickup from the Hong Kong Airport and our support desks will be always there to assist you at any time.

The private car offers by far the highest level of convenience and comfort. No waiting, no queuing, and no changing modes of transit. It assures that you complete the journey quickly without expended effort. The private car service is highly recommended for time-sensitive business travelers, travelers with a lot of luggage, families traveling with children, and seniors.

Travel & Visa Documents

Note: Getting from Hong Kong to Shenzhen requires crossing an international border into mainland China. There are immigration checkpoints and customs clearance at both the Hong Kong side of the border and the Shenzhen side of the border, both through which all travelers must pass.

In addition to having your passport ready and bearing in mind your country’s visa requirements to enter China mainland,  note that these two border crossings can often add significant additional time to the journey. You may also be eligible to get a visa on arrival at the Shenzhen border crossing

The Main Bus Routes:

Travelers crossing from Hong Kong to Shenzhen at Shenzen Huanggang Border

Travelers Queuing at Shenzhen Huanggang Border Immigration

► Huanggang (Lok Ma Chau)
(Coach service hours: 06:15 – 00:00)

Huanggang border, located at the foot of Shenzhen’s Central Business District in Futian District, is usually the quickest route to China. This is especially true if traveling to a hotel in the Futian or Luohu Districts.  Travelers will need to disembark the coach at the Hong Kong side of the border, with their luggage, pass through immigration, clear customs, and finally board a new to the Mainland China side of the border. There, the process is repeated on the China side of the border.

► Shenzhen Bay Port
(Coach service hours: 06:50 – 22:30)

The Shenzhen Bay Port is the most convenient route to China for travelers heading to the Shekou, Nanshan, or Bao’an Districts (Shenzhen Airport is in Bao’an). The Shenzhen Bay Port is located in Shekou’s Dongjiaotou area. Fortunately, travelers do not need to disembark at the Hong Kong side in this case as both customs checkpoints are in the same building.

► Shataukok (Shatoujiao)
(Coach service hours: 07:30 – 19:40)

The lesser-known Shataukok, or ‘Shatoujiao’ in Mandarin, may be an option for those heading directly to the Yantiangang Free Trade Zone.

Step 3: Pass HK & Shenzhen Immigration Checkpoints

Once the coaches reach the Hong Kong border, passengers will need to disembark with their luggage, pass through the Hong Kong immigration, and re-board a new coach to travel to the Shenzhen border. Once there, the same process repeats itself as you make your way across the Shenzhen immigration. Finally, as you make your way past the second border and are officially on the Mainland side, make your way to the taxi waiting area and queue for a taxi.

Step 4: Get to Shenzhen final destination

Shenzhen Taxi

When the coach arrives to Shenzhen, the last step you’ll need to do is get a taxi from the Shenzhen border to your hotel or destination in Shenzhen.

Summary. The coach bus goes directly to the Hong Kong border. You’ll enjoy a private seat on a coach bus. Once at the border, however, you’ll have to exit and reboard the bus twice while crossing through both the Hong Kong and Shenzhen immigration points. You’ll also need to wait for and take a taxi once you’ve arrived to the Shenzhen side. Thus, riding the coach bus for a cross-border transfer is recommended for travelers on a budget, with plenty of time to spare.

Recommendation: If you’re traveling on a tight budget then taking a coach from Hong Kong to Shenzhen is your best option.  The total cost of travel shouldn’t exceed more than 200 HKD. However, be prepared for a long journey. Waiting in queues, crossing the borders and then again waiting in queues to reboard the new coach, then finally waiting for the taxi to take you to your destination are all a part of this journey.  Make sure to travel light, as you’ll also be carrying your luggage every step of the way.

Hong Kong To Shenzhen by Shuttle at Huanggang Border

Hong Kong Airport To Shenzhen By Shuttle Minivans – Easy Guide

Shuttle minivan crossing the Hong Kong border. Passengers showing the passport from within the vehicle.

Cross the Border from Hong Kong Airport To Shenzhen By Shuttle Minivans

Getting from the Hong Kong Airport to Shenzhen by shuttle minivans is very convenient. Shared shuttle ticket booths can be found in Hong Kong International Airport’s Terminal 2, next to the Coach ticket booths, offering shared ride services from Hong Kong Airport to the Shenzhen border.

  • Time: 2-3 Hours
  • Convenience: Medium
  • Comfort: Low
  • Cost: HK$300+
  • Travel Steps:

Travel Steps By Shared Shuttle Minivan

Enter into HK Airport Arrival Hall and walk to Terminal 2 Airport coach and shuttle ticket counters (5-10 min)
→ Purchase ticket and board minivan (15-25 min.)
→ Travel to Hong Kong border (30-45 min.)
→  Disembark, pass through Hong Kong border immigration, re-board coach, and travel to Shenzhen border (10-20 min.)
→ Pass through Shenzhen immigration (10-20 min.)
→ Wait in taxi queue (5-20 min.)
→ Take taxi to Shenzhen destination (10-30 min.).

Shuttle vans from Hong Kong Airport to Shenzhen operate between 07:00 – 00:00. The total cost of the trip shouldn’t exceed HK$300, depending on the quantity of luggage and your Shenzhen destination. Cross border shuttles carry 6 passengers and depart only after all seats have been filled.

An advantage of taking the shuttle from the Hong Kong Airport to the Shenzhen border is that there is no need to disembark until you arrive at mainland China immigration. For Hong Kong immigration you are simply required to show your passport from inside the vehicle. Afterward, you’ll be taken through to the mainland border where you’ll go through China immigration on foot. Once through immigration, you’ll make your way to the taxi loading area (queue length depends on time of day). Avoid the fake taxi hawkers vying for your business. Make sure to have your destination address in Chinese ready to show the driver.

The shared shuttle from Hong Kong to Shenzhen provides a similar experience to the coach at a slightly higher cost. Both require ticket purchasing and loading at Terminal 2 of the Airport, both are direct routes to the border, both finish at the Shenzhen border once you pass through Immigration on your own. The shuttle offers a bit less comfort because you’re cramping into a van with 6 others, with bags, for upwards of an hour. However, it does offer a bit more convenience because you’ll only have to exit the vehicle once you arrive at the Shenzhen border.

Note: You’ll need to take a taxi in Shenzhen upon clearing any of the borders on the China side to finish your journey. The drivers will not speak any English. However, as long as you have your destination address written clearly in Chinese you should encounter no problems. Avoid taxi hawkers shouting “taxi” and encouraging you to take illegal transport. There are always licensed taxis even if there is a short waiting time.

Recommendation: The Shared Shuttle is another option for a budget traveler, slightly more expedient than coaches because you are allowed to stay in the vehicle during the Hong Kong immigration process.  The major disadvantage is the often cramped conditions, which can lead to an uncomfortable 45 min+ journey to the border. In this respect, a seat on a coach offers a bit more comfort. Also, pay attention to your arrival time in Hong Kong, as service is suspended at midnight.

How to get from Hong Kong Airport to Shenzhen By Public Bus & MTR

Getting from the Hong Kong Airport to Shenzhen via public bus and MTR ( the Metro service in Hong Kong) is the most cost-efficient option. However, you should expect a bit of inconvenience, some missteps, and an overall discomfort due to multiple bus route changes, having to carry your luggage at each step, waiting times required, and the occasional need for a basic Mandarin or Cantonese communication if you have any questions along the way. This route is recommended for travelers on a budget, adventurous travelers, and travelers with plenty of time.

  • Time: 3.5+ Hours
  • Convenience: Very Low
  • Comfort: Very Low
  • Cost: HK$50.90+ to Shenzhen border

Public Bus Boarding Point

Upon entering the Hong Kong International Airport Arrival Hall B, walk forward and exit through the ramp. Then, exit straight ahead and make your way out to the right, where the Airport public bus terminal is located.

Travel Route To Lo Wu – Luohu Border

Travel Steps By Bus & MTR/Metro

Exit Hong Kong Airport, find bus terminus, board bus and wait for departure (15-25 min)
→ Get on A43 bus route to Fanling and get off  at stop #3 at Sheung Shui Railway Station, fare: HKD $30.90 (1 h -1 h 20 min.)
→ Walk to the Sheung Shui MTR Station (5 min.)
→ Board MTR & exit the next stop at Lo Wu Station, fare: HK$ 20 (10-15 min.)
→ Walk to Hong Kong immigration building & pass through HK immigration (15-25 min.)
→ Walk across border on foot (5 min.)
→ Pass through China immigration at Luohu Checkpoint (15-60 min.)
→ Walk to Taxi area or Shenzhen Metro Luohu Station & wait in a queue (10-20 min.)
→ Take Taxi or Metro to Shenzhen final destination (20-60 min.)

This route is preferred by many people due to its convenient location. The Luohu checkpoint is the busiest immigration point connecting China and Hong Kong. From the Shenzhen Luohu District you can easily reach the Futian District (the central district of Shenzhen) by taxi or metro.

A43 Schedule:  7:00 – 00:00, every 15-30 minutes.

The route is serviced by double-decker buses with air-conditioning. The luggage racks allow you to store your luggage while you enjoy a scenic bus ride.

Payment Methods

  • Pay by cash. You’ll have to prepare the exact amount of HK$ because the bus driver will not have any change.
  • Purchase a single journey ticket at the Customer Service & Airbus Ticket Office (Airport Ground Transportation Centre).
  • Use the MTR Octopus Card that can be used to pay for multiple modes of transport including the MTR, Airport Express, Light Rail, buses, and ferries. It can be purchased at the Arrival Hall or in most MTR stations. If you’re a frequent traveler, you should definitely consider purchasing an Octopus Card.

Summary: This is the most cost-effective option, but it is also the least convenient. Hong Kong is extensively served by bus routes directly from the airport, however, there are no direct routes from Hong Kong Airport to Shenzhen. For travelers without experience in reading traditional Chinese Mandarin/Cantonese, or not wanting to change routes and modes of transport, we do not advise this method. For a more convenient option, the cross-border coaches provide a more expedient and direct route to Shenzhen, at a similar cost.

Travel Steps By Private Car

HK Airport Arrival Hall Driver Greeting → Private Car Travel Through HK and Shenzhen Huanggang Border Immigration → Shenzhen Final Destination.

The “X” factor you’ll want to take into account is “the number of people crossing the border at the same time as you.” Approach the border at the wrong time of day and the immigration process can take over an hour. A private car service eliminates this risk because it’s a door-to-door service.  Meaning, you are met by the driver at the HK Airport Arrival Hall, you travel directly to the border, and pass through HK immigration from inside the car. From there, you’ll pass straight through to the Shenzhen immigration point where you’ll need to exit the vehicle briefly (the Chinese government requires all travelers pass through the Shenzhen immigration on foot), and finally proceed comfortably to your hotel or final destination in Shenzhen.

Hong Kong To Shenzhen By Taxi

From Hong Kong Airport To Shenzhen By Taxi

Getting from the Hong Kong International Airport to Shenzhen by taxi is a more convenient way of making the journey. However, it is also significantly pricier compared to the coach and shuttle options. Similar to both the shuttle and coach, you must cross the border on foot and finish the journey in Shenzhen by hailing a local taxi; Hong Kong taxis are not permitted beyond the border.

The main advantage of choosing a Hong Kong taxi over a shuttle or coach is comfort. The trip from the Airport to the Hong Kong border is a bit more spacious, relaxing, and quicker because the taxi leaves immediately while the shuttle and coach both run on schedules that depart every 20 min or once enough passengers have arrived to fill the vacant seats.

Travelers Queuing at Shenzhen Huanggang Border Immigration

Note: Getting from Hong Kong to Shenzhen requires crossing an international border into Mainland China. There are immigration checkpoints and customs clearance at both the Hong Kong and Shenzhen side of the border, both through which all travelers must pass.

Make sure to have your passport and visa ready before entering China Mainland. Passport holders from certain countries are eligible for a visa on arrival at the Shenzhen border crossing. Note that these two border crossings can often add significant time to the journey, prepare accordingly.

If time is a high priority for you, there are expeditious private cars from Hong Kong to Shenzhen that allow you to stay in a vehicle and quickly pass through both the Hong Kong and Shenzhen borders.

Hong Kong Airport To Shenzhen By Taxi

  • Time: 2-3  Hours
  • Convenience: Low
  • Comfort: Medium
  • Cost: around HK$400

Travel Steps By Taxi

Enter into HK Airport Arrival Hall and make way to Airport taxi pickup area (5-10 min.)
→ Queue, wait and board taxi (5-10 min.)
→ Take a taxi to HK Lok Ma Chau border and disembark (35-50 min.)
→ Walk with luggage to Hong Kong Lok Ma Chau Immigration for HK side processing (10-25 min.)
→ Walk across China/HK border to the China Futian Station Border Immigration for China side processing (10-25 min.)
→ Exit the border station and make way on foot to taxi queue (5-10 min.)
→ Queue, wait and board Shenzhen taxi (10 min.)
→ Take a taxi to a final destination in Shenzhen (15-30 min.).

Taxi Boarding Point. The taxi boarding area is located to the left of the Mainland Coaches in Terminal 2 of the Hong Kong International Airport (HKG).  The taxi queue time at the Hong Kong Airport may vary, so be prepared for a long wait if you decide to use a taxi.

Hong Kong Red TaxiHong Kong Taxi Types

You have the option of choosing between both red and green taxis from the airport. Green taxis are only authorised to travel within Hong Kong’s New Territories, the area adjoining Shenzhen. Green taxi fares are on average HK$20 less than red taxis’ and usually have shorter queues at the airport.

Cross-Border Points

There are a number of borders to choose from depending on which part of Shenzhen you plan to go:

► Shenzhen Bay Crossing

  • Service hours: 06:30 – 00:00
  • Taxi Fare: HK$250+ to the border

If you plan to go to the Nanshan or Shekou District or Shenzhen Bao’An Int’l Airport, Shenzhen Bay Crossing is the best option.

► Lok Ma Chau (HK side) – Huanggang (Shenzhen side) Crossing

  • Service hours: 24 hours
  • Taxi Fare: HK$300+ to the border

The Lok Ma Chau – Huanggang border crossing is a great option if you’re planning to go to Shenzhen’s Futian District, also known as the financial or central district of Shenzhen. The Huanggang checkpoint is open 24 hours, however, it is not connected to the MTR/Metro system. It can be reached by taxi or bus during the day and exclusively by taxis past 12 am, midnight.

Another slight disadvantage of the Lok Ma Chau – Huanggang Crossing is that the HK and China immigration offices are separated by a long road. A  shuttle bus is there to take passengers between the two borders, the ride is roughly 7 minutes long.

► Lok Ma Chau (HK side) – Futian (Shenzhen side) Crossing

  • Service hours: 06:30 – 22:20
  • Rates: HK$300+ to the border

The Futian Checkpoint Station is connected to Hong Kong’s Lok Ma Chau station by a footbridge. It’s also conveniently located at the central district of Shenzhen, in Futian District.

How To Cross HK-Shenzhen Border by Taxi?

The taxi will drop you off at the Hong Kong side of the border. From there you will cross the Hong Kong Immigration. Then, you’ll make your own way to the Shenzhen side of the border.  At the Huanggang checkpoint this involves taking a bus, as mentioned earlier. At the Lok Ma Chau – Futian and Shenzhen Bay checkpoints, you’ll just have to walk to the Shenzhen side of the border.

During the day, the most common border for taxis to drop off travelers is the Lok Ma Chau – Futian border.  It’s more convenient in that both sides of its border control are located in the same building. As mentioned earlier, once you pass through Hong Kong border control you simply walk through a long hall to reach the Shenzhen side immigration.

Once on Shenzhen side…

You’ll need to take a taxi in Shenzhen upon clearing customs on the China side to finish your journey. Remember that the drivers will not speak any English. However, as long as you have your destination address written clearly in Chinese, the taxi driver will know where you’re going. You should avoid ‘black taxi’ drivers shouting “Taxi! Taxi!” and encouraging you to take illegal transport. There are always licensed taxis available, even if there is a short waiting time. Illegal taxi drivers will always charge significantly higher rates.

RecommendationTaxis can be a good option to get from Hong Kong Airport to Shenzhen border, especially late at night when both coach and shared minivan services are suspended.

While the total trip cost will be slightly higher using a taxi to the border (under HK$400), taxis do offer more comfort, as HK taxis are more spacious than shared shuttles and coaches. The total travel time is about the same as with the shuttle and coach.

Many are only vaguely aware of the available transportation options, and even less aware of what to expect during the journey itself. After reading this blog, however, you will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to effectively select the right transportation for you, plan the journey to transfer from Hong Kong Airport to Guangzhou, and have one less thing to worry about on your trip to China!

There are five main modes of transportation from Hong Kong Airport to Guangzhou; train, private car, long-distance bus, airplane, and ferry. Each option varies dramatically on the 4 key areas of concern you should consider regarding this journey:

  1. Time: How many hours do I have to spend to get from HK Airport to my Guangzhou destination?
  2. Convenience: How many transit switches and different modes of transport will I have to make?
  3. Comfort: How comfortable am I sharing a full vehicle, and walking with all my luggage for varying distances at different points in the journey?
  4. Cost: What is my budget for this journey? Am I willing to spend more for a reduced time, increased convenience, and comfort?

According to these main criteria, let’s first briefly compare and review each transport mode, then we’ll take a more in-depth look at the pros and cons of each ground transportation.

Hong Kong Airport – Guangzhou Coach Service Timetable

From Hong Kong Airport to Guangzhou downtown, coach services are available in the Arrivals Hall regularly from 7:10 to 22:30.

► Earliest Departure: 7:10 AM

► Last Departure: 22:30 PM

► Frequency: Every 30 mins to different Guangzhou destinations

► Ticket Price: HK$ 180 (US$23) – HK$ 320 (US$41), depending on time & service provider.

Note: Passengers are required to present valid travel documents to Mainland China before boarding the coaches.

Summary: Unlike trains, coach buses are available at the Hong Kong Airport Terminals within walking distance. Currently, there are many coaches of different bus companies shuttling between Hong Kong Airport and Guangzhou. Another advantage of taking coaches is that you can choose one of the 3 available destination points in Guangzhou.

Delays can arise when passing the HK – China border. Passengers must wait & queue for the initial coach departure in Hong Kong, pass the Hong Kong border and walk to the China border for immigration checks, and finally re-board a new coach on the China side. Once you arrive at one of the Guangzhou Bus Stations, head to the taxi stand area or take the metro in Guangzhou to get to your hotel. The journey time from Hong Kong Airport to Guangzhou Downtown by coach bus takes 3.5 – 4.5 hours.

Recommendation: Taking coaches is another option for passengers who have plenty of time but limited budget. The journey by Hong Kong – Guangzhou coach also has fewer interchanges and, thus, is more convenient than trains. The X factor here is again the number of people crossing the HK-China border, which can prolong your trip significantly, not to mention the pain of dealing with your luggage hopping from one bus to another. If a tight budget outweighs your need for quicker travel time, then don’t hesitate to take a coach from Hong Kong Airport to Guangzhou.

Summary: The quickest option to travel between Hong Kong and Guangzhou is via a flight. For travelers looking for a high level of comfort and the quickest times. The daily flights to/from Hong Kong (HKG) and Guangzhou (CAN) are available daily at convenient times. You can arrive at Guangzhou in the morning before 9 AM and go back to Hong Kong at night after a long productive day in Guangzhou.

However, getting to / from Guangzhou Airport can add to your journey time. You can use taxis or metro lines to get to Guangzhou Downtown. If you use a taxi, prepare your Guangzhou destination address written in Chinese characters and show it to the driver. Beware of any taxi scams that are popular in the Guangzhou area.

Recommendation: Getting from Hong Kong to Guangzhou by plane is quite expensive, but it’s the fastest and safest transfer option for the HK-Guangzhou route. During the short 1-hour flight, you can rest and catch up on emails. We advise you to arrive at the airport 2 hours before the flight for customs clearance and luggage check-in. The disadvantages include flight delays and the additional time and effort required to get from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) to your hotel in Guangzhou. If you hire a private airport transfer to Hong Airport and/or a private pickup from the Guangzhou Airport, you can save a significant amount of time on your trip.

Recommendation: The Ferry Terminal is conveniently located at the Hong Kong Airport and can ease your journey from Hong Kong to Guangzhou. The ferry voyage only takes 70 minutes.  Travel to Shanghai Railway Station or Hongqiao Railway Station (1 hour)
Purchase High Speed Rail Ticket & Wait For Next Train (30-60 min.)

Taxi to Suzhou Final Destination (20-30 min.).

Summary:  There is no train that goes directly from Pudong Airport (PVG) to Suzhou. You’ll need to take a train from one of the two train stations in Shanghai: (a) Shanghai Railway Station (Shanghai Station) or (b) Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. Shanghai Station is closer to the Pudong Airport. The train from Shanghai to Suzhou only takes 30 minutes, however, you should prepare some additional time for getting from Pudong Airport to one of these train stations in Shanghai. You can get to these by either taxi or use of the Maglev train + subway. Once you arrive at the railway station in Shanghai, you will need to queue up for ticket purchase and wait for the next available train. Recommendation: For business travelers without experience in reading traditional Chinese, getting to the train station and navigating yourself around can be a time-consuming and (at times) stressful experience. Be prepared for inevitable delays, and plan your timing accordingly. You’ll need time to wait & queue for a taxi at the Pudong Airport or wait to get the Maglev ticket and travel to/from different subway stations in Shanghai, then wait again at the railway station while passing through security and purchasing your ticket; and again for the next train, and again at the taxi stand in Suzhou.  For those looking for a more quick and easy alternative, a private car may be a better choice.

Step 2: Shanghai Railway Station → Suzhou Railway Station

By High Speed Train

Once you reach Shanghai Railway Station or Hongqiao Railway Station, purchase a train ticket and get on the train from Shanghai to Suzhou.

There are 2 types of high-speed trains that depart daily: D and G trains and normal trains which are slower (K, T, and Z trains). The normal trains take about 2 hours to get from Shanghai to Suzhou, whereas high-speed trains take roughly 30-40 minutes.

The G train is both available from Shanghai Railway Station and Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. However, the D train is only available in Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and is both less-expensive and slower than the G train. The G train will take about 30 minutes from Hongqiao Station to Suzhou, and 40 minutes from Shanghai Station to Suzhou.

► Train Schedule:

From Shanghai Railway Station to Suzhou “G” train departs from 06:09 – 21:42, every 10-15 minutes.

From Hongqiao Railway Station “G” train departs from 05:48 – 22:55, whereas “D” train departs from 06:12 – 21:26, every 10 to 60 minutes.

D type trains: CNY 25.5 (US$ 4) for a second class seat and CNY 30.5 (US$ 4.50) for a first class seat.

► How To Buy Train Tickets:

At a Train Station:

You can buy a train ticket at any train station in Shanghai using cash, a Chinese bank card, and WeChat-wallet or Alipay (which are tied to your Chinese bank account); foreign credit cards are not accepted. You will need to bring your passport. Self-service machines are available for passengers holding a Chinese ID card only. It is advised to purchase train tickets a few days in advance in China due to the high demand.

If you choose to buy the ticket at the station on the same day you wish to travel to Suzhou, you’ll may need to wait 2-3 hours before you can get on the next available train. So, purchasing a train ticket in advance is highly recommended, especially if you go for a-day-trip and are rushed for time.

► Online:

If you’re familiar with Chinese language and have a Chinese bank account, you can book train tickets online on Chinese Railways’ official website www.12306.cn with no extra fees, simply filling out your passport details.

If you’ve successfully purchased the train ticket online, it’s still highly recommended you arrive at the train station early (at least 40 minutes before the departure time) to print out your online reservation. You’ll need to show your reservation number and passport. Unfortunately, there is no fast queue for printing your online ticket, you’ll still need to queue up in the normal queue (which can be unpredictably long) together with the passengers who still need to purchase a ticket.

Change Ticket:

If you wish to change your ticket to an earlier or later time, you can change it once for free. Any changes to your ticket must be made at the specific window of the station for foreigners or normal windows but you should confirm at the window before queuing up to avoid wasting time.

► Few Things to Note:

► During National holidays in China, the demand for trains is extremely high. The train tickets are usually sold out a month or 3 weeks in advance. It’s not recommended for tourists to travel during the National holidays, particularly: 1) Chinese New Year Period in January/February, and 2) National Golden week October 1–7th.

► Both the Hongqiao Railway and Shanghai Railway Stations are large stations, like airports, and it takes time to navigate through them, find the ticket counters, and find the platform or long-distance bus area. There are also multiple security checks at the entrances. Most people don’t speak English and at times it could be a stressful experience to find where to go. But as long as you carefully follow the signs, you’ll get where you need to be.

► Trains typically depart on time without delays. Arrive at the railway platform in advance to allow time to queue and board.

► Most railway stations in China are located out of the city center. Take into account additional time to find the transportation to your final destination in Suzhou.

Step 3: Suzhou Railway Station → Suzhou Hotel / Final Destination:

By Taxi     By Subway     By Bus

► Arrival Train Stations in Suzhou:

Trains from Shanghai arrive at the Suzhou Railway  and Suzhou North Stations. From these stations, you can take a taxi, subway, bus, or a private car to get to your hotel or other destination in Suzhou.

Suzhou Railway Station (苏州站) is the main station of Suzhou located in the downtown area. The lower class trains (T and K trains) as well as the G and D bullet trains stop here. Taxis, buses, and subway are all available at this station. The journey to downtown Suzhou will take about 30 minutes.

Suzhou North Railway Station (苏州北站) is only for D and G trains running between Shanghai and Suzhou. From here, it takes half an hour to reach the Suzhou city center.

Suzhou Yuanqu Railway Station (苏州园区站) also serves D and G trains but this station is not recommended for most travelers because the location is very inconvenient, far from the city center.

4. Shanghai Pudong Airport to Suzhou By Taxi

Shanghai Pudong Airport to Suzhou By Taxi

  • Time: 2.5 – 2.75 hours
  • Convenience: Moderate
  • Comfort: Low To Moderate
  • Cost: High, not fixed

Summary: It’s not easy to find an authorized taxi that will go from Shanghai to other neighboring cities like Suzhou. The cabs are normally limited to operating within the city limits. For those that do, there are also additional tolls that taxi drivers must pay when leaving the Shanghai area. For that reason, they tend to refuse going to other cities. Prices for farther distances are usually negotiated, not calculated by taxi meter. Even if you can negotiate in Chinese with the driver (and taxi drivers don’t speak English), the price is subject to fluctuating depending on time, traffic conditions, and the driver’s mood. This is a cause of significant stress, frustration, and delay for many travelers.

*Note: More and more taxis are only accepting payments by WeChat or Alipay, cash is becoming less and less common in China. As of the date of this blog, you must open a Chinese bank account and link it to your WeChat or Alipay wallet in order to make such payments. Taxis also do not accept international credit cards.

Never attempt to take a ‘black taxi.’ These are illegal taxis driven by unlicensed drivers, you’ll see them outside of any big station or airport. These are notorious for scamming their passengers by offering a good price, only to leave their passenger in the middle of a highway. Rather, stay safe by booking a trustworthy private transfer online, prior to your arrival, to travel between Shanghai and Suzhou.

Recommendation: We would only recommend this option for travelers who master the local knowledge and ability to negotiate in Chinese. The traveler should be able to clearly negotiate with the taxi driver on pricing and explain the destination. However, this option should only be considered if all other options are unavailable. Uncertain travel times and unregulated rates should be enough to discourage most travelers.
